(7th Anniversary)

7th Anniversary

I was woken up this morning by my husband and the girls singing Happy Birthday and carrying a tray with fruit salad and apple juice. The anniversary of my heart surgeries have become my “second birthday” and there is nothing better than to celebrate with my family and apple juice! (Readers of Beautiful Affliction know why.)

This year is extra special since my book just came out! Wow, that morning seven years ago I could never have imagined that one day I would hold a book in my hand, telling my crazy story!

Today seven years ago chapters 38–40–42–44–46–48–50 in Beautiful Affliction took place. I didn’t realize until now that so many chapters of my book happen during a single day! And what a day it was, I will never forget hugging my small girls goodbye before leaving them with my mother, as my husband drove me to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for my heart surgery.

(My husband just called and told me that he booked a trip to Bali next week! Yay!! So instead of a book tour I will relax on the beach and gaze out to the horizon, my absolute favorite view.)

I am so very grateful that my life was saved during my planned open-heart surgery on October 8, all those years ago, and then again thanks to an emergency open-heart surgery on October 9. After having been so close to death, it felt like I was reborn through the miracles that led me to this dramatic climax to years of fatigue, chest pressure and difficult breathing. This re-birth is what we celebrate on October 8, my second birthday.

It feels pretty great, being seven years old. 🙂 Last time I visited my cardiologist in Singapore, he couldn’t see any wear and tear on my new heart valve, so the wearing-out process seems to be slow, which is a good thing! It means I will not need the next heart surgery until many more years, hopefully, so I am very happy about that.

Thanks for stopping by and take care of your hearts my friends,

Lene

PS. If you’ve read my book, Beautiful Affliction, and liked it, it would mean the world to me if you would consider leaving a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. Thank you.

(Change of Plans)

Wow, there’s so much going on that the big book tour I had planned in October, spanning across Asia–Sweden–Philadelphia, USA, turned out to not perhaps be the best idea. We’re holding off on that for now, since I am completely busy answering interviews, appearing on radio (last night), writing articles and guest blog posts, not to mention answering readers who contact me daily with questions and letters and just to tell me how much they love Beautiful Affliction! In other words, a wonderful way to be kept busy!

My publisher has already planned a US book tour for me and fellow fall authors, but, it is just too much for me right now, especially also with our upcoming move to Malaysia in December. Wish I could go though, to meet readers and my wonderful “Pub sisters” that I have gotten to know this last year!

But we are actually planning to go back to Sweden around Christmas (when we are in between houses and our furniture are shipped in a container), and I have already started dreaming about Swedish Christmas food! 🙂

If you want to be kept in the loop on everything Beautiful Affliction, I try to post the big news on the page called NEWS, found on the main bar above. There’s also a lot happening over at Goodreads and Amazon, and the Swedish online booksellers, which you can check out!

For me it was a big deal to be published as main feature on Writer’s Digest, which I have been following for years. Writer’s Digest is the world’s largets platform for writers with 700 000 monthly visitors and it was such a joy to wake up one morning to find that they had published my article “5 Steps To Writing in Your Second Language”. (It’s about Joseph Conrad, the Swedish Chef, and me.)

Under NEWS you can also find author interviews, excerpts from my book, and several online lists that include Beautiful Affliction. For example it was great fun to see my book listed as the most anticipated memoir for fall on Buzzfeed!

Can’t believe my book has already been out in the world for three weeks! Time is flying by!

Thanks for all your support,

Lene

PS. Here comes the begging I have been warning you would come: if you have read my book, would you please consider leaving a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads? Every rating and review means a lot to me. Thank you. End of begging for this time.

Thank You

Beautiful Affliction and roses

It has already been a week since Publication Day, and what a week!

The first 24 hours I barely slept because of the congratulations that poured in from the US, Europe and Asia. Since these are three different time zones, people started waking up before people in another time zone went to bed, and I think I stayed up to 3 am that first night celebrating with all our friends around the world. 🙂

A big thank-you from my heart, to everyone who sent well-wishes, pictures of Beautiful Affliction as they were reading, messages, e-mails, tweets, instagram pics and comments, I appreciate it so very much! It is quite an emotional experience, seeing one’s book being born, and such tremendous support makes all the difference.

If you have read the acknowledgements in the back of my book, you know I have many people to thank who have helped me reach this point on my journey, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brooke Warner, my amazing publisher, who guided me through the rough sea of the publishing journey with a steady hand, and who convinced me to go ahead with the cover, when I wanted to chicken out!

I am also very grateful to the amazing Julie Metz, who designed the cover, which I have received so much praise for that should really go to her. Also Stacey Aaronson, who did the book interior have rendered me much praise, which is really hers. I can’t tell you how many readers who have reacted overwhelmingly positive to both the cover and the interior, and the overall impression of my book. I would also like to thank Krissa who did the proofreading, and who did a fabulous job, especially making sure all the medical terms were correct. In the middle of all this was Cait, making sure we were on schedule and sorting out the occasional mess.

Also Crystal Patriarche, boss and CEO, was amazing, reassuring me when I felt overwhelmed and cheering me on, and on a more practical note, putting my book in the hands of Megan, who is doing a fabulous job spreading the word about Beautiful Affliction, opening doors and hearts to my story. I am very grateful to all of my team at She Writes Press, who have helped bring my story into the world in a miraculous way, really this is all much more than I ever could have dreamed of.

I must also mention my amazing Pub sisters of She Writes Press, who have helped me more times than I can recall, in big and small ways, with concerns, advice, tips, well-wishes and cheers. A big thank-you to all the amazing and generous authors who have become my friends!

But also, even before I signed with She Writes Press I had two cheer-leaders extra-ordinaire, my wonderful editors Hila Ratzabi and Anne Dubuisson. I feel especially grateful, since English is my second language, and it was wonderful to have my editors to go to with questions big and small. Anne also stopped me when I wanted to make the traditional (apparently happens to all writers) last-minute panic changes to the manuscript, and for that I am very grateful, because now, with better perspective, I know she was right.

I would also like to mention my good friends Dan, and also Neil, who helped me at different stages: Dan ploughed through the manuscript right after I had finished it in English and then again later on, and truth be told I don’t know how many times Dan ended up reading my manuscript, he somehow never seemed getting tired of it.

Neil volunteered to read my book after all the work was done; one last proofreading after all the editing was finished and my head was just spinning from reading it over and over. He found two errors! Amazing, I still don’t know how he saw those, because it was typical errors where the language sounds right, but in writing it is just wrong. Thank you, both Dan and Neil.

I would also like to thank my huge, wonderful family, for cheering me on. My siblings and spouses, my nieces and nephews, my brothers and sister in law with spouses, my parents, my parents in law, my aunt and uncle, my cousins, my friends, everyone. I miss you all and hope to see you soon, whether in the US or in Sweden.

I know this is getting long, but I must mention my wonderful husband Anders and our amazing girls, who have been my cheerleaders and therapists, listening to all of my ramblings and doubts and always telling me to never quit, but to keep going.

And, of course, thank you to my blog readers who have warmed my heart with your comments many times!! You are wonderful!

Thank you everyone, from the bottom of my heart.

Love,

Lene

Publication Day!

The official publication day for Beautiful Affliction is finally here!

Today my book is released in bookstores all over the US! Amazon and other online booksellers started shipping the book three weeks ago, and I have been getting so many messages, pictures, favorite quotes, questions about the book, early reviews and offers to participate in interviews, that I have been kept up at night occupied with the labor of love answering all this!

Somehow I had imagined that my book would be released like a drop into the ocean, with a small PLOP and a few rings on the surface; never, ever could I have imagined the overwhelmingly warm reception my book is getting!

Only last week Beautiful Affliction was included in YourTango’s list: “11 Incredible Books Every Smart Woman Should Read This Fall“, alongside literary giants Elizabeth Gilbert, Margaret Atwood and Cheryl Strayed! What an honor!

I am continuously updating the Page called “NEWS” here on my website, found above on the main bar, where you can find more news as they come in.

JUST IN: Author Interview on Suzanne M. Brazil’s blog!

JUST IN: Review of Beautiful Affliction on BookPage!

Thank you for visiting on this special day and taking part in the celebrations!

Many Hugs,

Lene

Countdowns

Lene Fogelberg

I have done this before. Counted the days and weeks to an important event. One spring many years ago I counted the moments until my wedding, filled with thoughts of pearl-embroidered silk and waltzing with my dear groom to be. While stroking my heavy belly, singing to my unborn baby, I counted the days until I would meet my first and then my second child. And now, I am counting the weeks and days until my first book is published, and experiencing the familiar bubbles in my stomach and the overpowering feeling of change and grateful disbelief: is this really happening?

I’m reminded of another countdown in my life, of an altogether different manner. That time, I was not looking forward in excited anticipation but futilely trying to hold onto each passing day as it faded into twilight and slipped from my fingers. A countdown when I looked at the number on the calendar, wondering: will that be my last day? Looking at the date was like staring into the blackness of a vast night sky, where will I be that day? On this date was written “heart surgery” and after this date, there were no more marks, no plans, no appointments, only an unwritten question mark, that gave all the days leading up to it a new weight, tying me closer to all that I loved.

The dreaded day came and went and I survived. This is what it taught me. Every day is a big event. To wake up, open my eyes, feel my scarred heart beat its steady rhythm, hear my family get ready for school and work and to smile to myself: I am here. Nevertheless, I still count the days until September 15 when I will wake up to declare: I am here and today my story goes out into the world.

A week with Beautiful Affliction

A-Week-with-Lene-Fogelberg-6

This week I have been guest author on best-selling author Terri Giuliano Long’s blog. It was a tremendous honor to be invited to join her on her wonderful blog and this week I have been amazed time and again by the beautiful ways my book was presented, it brought tears to my eyes more than once!

A-Week-With-Lene-Fogelberg

The week started off with my guest blog post “Writing My Way Out of the Silence”.

And then eight quotes from Beautiful Affliction, which even was made into a small video!

After which, came an excerpt from my book, chapter 1, beautifully illustrated.

Beautiful Affliction Camera

And lastly, eight more quotes, with one more video!

Lene Fogelberg quote 1

I am so very grateful to Terri, for this opportunity, and of course, for the beautiful endorsement she offered after reading Beautiful Affliction:

“In her breathtaking memoir, Beautiful Affliction, Lene Fogelberg elegantly unites the savagery and raw beauty of the natural world with the wisdom and poignant insight of a young wife and mother for whom each moment, whether or not she realizes it, may be her last. Exquisite imagery and poetic prose pulse through this powerful, emotionally gripping story. With Beautiful Affliction, Lene Fogelberg gives us a gorgeously written story to savor and share, while adding her shimmering, deeply intelligent voice to the literary pantheon.”

—TERRI GIULIANO LONG, author of USA Today bestseller In Leah’s Wake

There will be an excerpt of Terri’s endorsement on the back cover of Beautiful Affliction, and the full quote will be in the “Praise for” pages in the beginning of my book.

Only four more weeks until publication day! Very exciting!

Big News!

KL day

We are moving to Kuala Lumpur!

Maybe you already guessed it, when I mentioned we were going on a “mini vacation” to Malaysia. 🙂 We came back yesterday, after three intense days of getting to know the city and visiting friends who live there. I wanted to take more pictures to show you, but we were so busy I barely had time to pick up the camera. Luckily I managed to take a few of the view from our hotel room.

KL evening

Kuala Lumpur is a beautiful, vibrant city with green parks and glistening high-rises. We will move in December, to be in place for January 1st.

Here’s also a pic that I took from the living room of our friends who live downtown, with a spectacular view of the famous Petronas Twin Towers:

But we will miss our wonderful friends here in Jakarta, living here has been an amazing adventure, which has blessed our family in so many ways. It is with a heavy heart I think of packing up our life in Indonesia and moving on. It is a good thing we are not moving right away, but have time to get used to the idea and take our farewell of amazing Jakarta.

And oh, I have to tell you: one morning I woke up in the hotel room to find another endorsement of Beautiful Affliction in my inbox!

“Fogelberg has crafted a literary and beautifully compelling story, which is much more than a medical mystery. It is a heartfelt and touching story about a mother who loves her husband and children and struggles with the thought of leaving them behind. Her efforts to give them a sense of her love and how she wants that love to be remembered is what makes this book a magnificent memoir that I will be thinking about for a long time.”
— Steven L. Peck, author of The Scholar of Moab and A Short Stay in Hell

I am very grateful for Steven’s blurb, it didn’t make it into the book, since it has already gone to the printer, but every endorsement is useful during the marketing and PR campaign. And also, on a personal level, it means so much to me every time someone says they loved my book (he really said that! “I loved your book. Thank you for a wonderful read.” !!!). I can’t believe I now have thirteen blurbs!

Hugs,

Lene

Final Cover!

Busy days at the Fogelburger’s! 🙂

I am very close to finalizing the first draft of my novel taking place in Jakarta. Yesterday our girls came back from their holiday in Sweden (Yay!). Tomorrow we leave for a mini vacation together in Malaysia.

And the cover for Beautiful Affliction has been finalized, the final pages approved and my book has gone to the printer!

My publisher and cover designer chose the beautiful blurb excerpts to go on the cover, and I am very happy with having four blurbs on the back cover and one on the front; five in all!

I have gotten more endorsements than I dared dream of: twelve beautiful blurbs that are to be featured on the first three pages of my book under the headline “Praise for Beautiful Affliction, A Memoir”.

I was hoping for three blurbs when I sent out letters asking for endorsements to around fifteen authors that I admire, never would I have imagined that I would receive twelve! I know how busy people are, and endorsing a debut author is a huge favor, but everyone was so kind.

Here are some of the things they said in their e-mails, that wasn’t in the blurbs, a sneak-peek “behind the blurbs” if you will: 🙂

  • “Wow, your story is insane.”
  • “I enjoyed your book so much!”
  • “Holy moly, what a story!”
  • “I couldn’t put it down.”
  • “To parent with such grace under such circumstances is beyond heroic.”
  • “Your letters to your daughters slayed me. Just slayed me.”
  • “Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read your stunning new memoir.”
  • “I read it all in one day, I was THAT captivated!”
  • “I’m awed by your courage.”
  • “Your writing is absolutely gorgeous.”
  • “I had so many positive things to say I couldn’t fit them into one blurb.”
  • “It was truly a privilege to read and endorse it.”

I am so humbled and grateful for each and everyone of the amazing, kind and generous authors who took the time to read and endorse my book. It really means a lot, especially perhaps when you are a new author struggling with feelings of “what-on-earth-am-I-doing???” It is a roller coaster ride of emotions to see your story grow up and prepare to launch into the world, and it is with a lot of agony one prepares to “let go”. But the support from wonderful fellow authors certainly makes it easier.

And also the support from my publisher and of course, my sweet blogging friends!!

Hugs to you all!
